The 5 most beautiful hikes in the Wilder Kaiser region

You’ve checked into the trendy Dorfglück Hostel, your hiking boots are ready, and now all that’s missing is the right tour? So many beautiful hiking trails await around Söll that making a decision isn’t easy. That’s why we’ve selected five hikes that we particularly recommend for your active holiday in the Wilder Kaiser region.

The best part: Not only do you stay super affordably at our hostel, but you’re also right in the middle of the hiking area! That’s why you don’t need a car for these tours. Many starting points can be reached from Söll with the free KaiserJet hiking bus – and for the first hike, you can even start directly from the village. That’s exactly how we like hiking holidays in the Wilder Kaiser region: uncomplicated, varied, and with plenty of Tyrolean mountain air.

The most important things at a glance:

  • Our Top 5: Sunnseitweg in Söll, Rehbachklamm & Hinterschießlingalm, Hintersteiner See & Walleralm, Schleierwasserfall, and the Gruttenhütte – from leisurely to sporty, there’s something for everyone.
  • Leave your car behind: Many starting points can be easily reached from Söll with the KaiserJet hiking bus. For the Sunnseitweg, you can even start directly from the village.
  • Social Living: Our trendy hostel is your affordable accommodation in Söll in Tyrol if you want to enjoy a budget-friendly holiday, hike, and connect with our cool community – also perfect for solo travelers. So after hiking: take off your boots, head to the garden, or cook together in the communal kitchen. And while chatting with the Dorfglück community, the next tour is usually decided pretty quickly.

1. Sunnseitweg Hike in Söll

For a relaxed start to your hiking holiday

  • Approx. 11 km | approx. 3:45 hours | 420 meters elevation gain | moderate tour
  • Do you want to start your hike leisurely and get a feel for the area? Then the Sunnseitweg is a really beautiful first tour. It starts at Franzlhof in Söll and leads you along the sunny side above the village through a landscape that looks pretty much exactly how you imagine Tyrol: old farmhouses, meadows, forests, and always clear views of the Wilder Kaiser and Hohe Salve.
  • The path does climb in places, but remains pleasant to walk. Especially if you’ve just arrived or are planning a bigger mountain tour the next day, this loop is perfect. And don’t forget to stop occasionally and take your first cool selfies.
  • Our Dorfglück tip: For this tour, you can simply forget the bus. From Söll town center, walk to the starting point at Franzlhof and set off directly. It hardly gets more convenient.

2. Hike through the Rehbachklamm to Hinterschießlingalm

Water, forest, and then a really good hearty snack at the alpine hut

  • Approx. 9.5 km as a circular tour | approx. 3:15 hours | 510 meters elevation gain | moderate hike
  • On hot summer days, the Rehbachklamm in Scheffau is worth its weight in gold. From the village center, you hike on path no. 42 into the gorge and follow the stream uphill over small bridges and footbridges. The water rushes beside you, it’s pleasantly cool in the forest, and there’s always something to see along the way.
  • Further up, the path becomes a bit steeper. A small special feature awaits there: an old, illuminated mining tunnel from the 16th century. After that, the landscape suddenly changes. The forest becomes sparser, and a little later you see the idyllic Hinterschießlingalm at 1,020 meters. Now is definitely the time for a break and “a proper platter of cold cuts and cheese” at the alpine hut.
  • Afterwards, you can continue the loop via the Seilabodenkreuz and the Kaiseralm or hike back to Scheffau from the Hinterschießlingalm along the wide forest road.
  • How to get there: From Söll village, take the free KaiserJet hiking bus to Scheffau village. Your hike practically starts right in the center of the village.

3. Circular hike Hintersteiner See & Walleralm

First up to the alpine hut, then down to the turquoise water

  • Approx. 9.3 km | approx. 3:30 hours | 360 meters elevation gain | easy to moderate hike
  • On this loop, you get two pretty good reasons for hiking: a rustic alpine hut and one of Tyrol’s most beautiful mountain lakes. It starts on the eastern shore of Hintersteiner See at Seestüberl. From there, path no. 45a first leads you uphill through the forest.
  • The ascent will make you sweat a bit, but at the top, the Walleralm awaits at 1,170 meters. Here you can stop for refreshments, stretch your legs, and treat yourself to a proper snack. Afterwards, it goes back down towards the lake.
  • Once you’ve reached the bottom, the most leisurely part of the loop follows. A natural forest path leads along the south shore back to the starting point. The clear, turquoise water shimmers through the trees again and again – and by now at the latest, you’ll know why Hintersteiner See is an absolute must-see on a hiking holiday in the Wilder Kaiser region.
  • How to get there: Take the KaiserJet from Söll to Scheffau. At Scheffau Dorf, change to hiking bus 30 to Hintersteiner See. It will take you directly to the starting point at the lake.

With our cool “Social Living” concept, you’ll get to know a sociable community here at Hostel Dorfglück, where you cook together, laugh together and chat about your mountain adventures.

4. Hike to Schleierwasserfall in Going

The Schleierwasserfall is one of those places that look impressive in photos – and are even more striking in real life.

  • Your tour starts at the Hüttling hiking trailhead in Going. Initially, it’s a fairly gentle uphill climb, later the wider path turns into a narrower mountain trail.
  • You hike through forest and over alpine meadows, pass the Stiegenbachfall, and gradually approach the mighty rock faces of the Wilder Kaiser. For the last section, you should be sure-footed, as the ground here becomes rootier and rockier.
  • Then you suddenly stand before it: water falling over the massive overhanging wall, with climbing routes winding through the rock below. With a bit of luck, you can watch the pros climb – the Schleierwasserfall is, after all, one of the well-known meeting points of the international climbing scene.
  • You can hike back via the Graspoint-Niederalm and turn it into a circular hike.
  • How to get there: Take the KaiserJet from Söll towards Going. The free on-demand taxi to the Hüttling hiking trailhead is particularly convenient. With the Wilder Kaiser GuestCard, the ride is free, but you must reserve the taxi by 8 PM the evening before at the latest.

5. Hike up to the Gruttenhütte

If you really want to get close to the Wilder Kaiser

  • Approx. 12 km | approx. 4 hours | approx. 600 meters elevation gain | moderate hike
  • This hike takes you into more alpine terrain. The Gruttenhütte is located at 1,571 meters directly beneath the mighty rock faces of the Wilder Kaiser – and the path there alone is an experience.
  • You start at the Wochenbrunner Alm and first hike over alpine meadows towards Gaudeamushütte. After that, the landscape changes. The meadows are left behind, mountain pines and scree become more prevalent, and the rock faces draw ever closer.
  • The path winds uphill in switchbacks over the Kaiserbödl. The trail is well-trodden but already in more alpine terrain. Once at the top, it’s best to find a nice spot in front of the Gruttenhütte and just sit for a while. The view towards Ellmauer Tor and far into the valley is one of those you won’t soon forget.
  • For the return journey, depending on the chosen tour, you can descend back towards Wochenbrunner Alm.
  • How to get there: From Söll town center, the KaiserJet takes you to Ellmau Dorf/Bauhof. There, you change to the free hiking bus 40, which goes directly to the Wochenbrunner Alm.
